Sonic hard water treatment?

I'm concerned about the long term corrosive effects on a new oil steam boiler of a hard water/mixed copper-iron pipe combination. I already see scaling/calcium deposits on faucets etc. Someone told me about a sonic device that reduces the bad effects of the "chemistry" that's going on in the plumbing, effectively "cleaning" the water. Does anyone know about these devices -what they are and if they work?
