Munchkin Problems

Seems like there are alot of problems? I have a service call on a 199 L.P. Munckin. The unit keeps locking out on high limit. The home owner says the high limit switch was replaced last spring and it is now acting the same- The unit keep locking out and after manual reset it works for a few hours until the next lock out. I did talk to one frustrated installer who has over 100 units out there and he told me to check the cumbustion chamber for a white film. He said the L.Ps are prone to this build up and the film will cover the heat exhanger surface and not pass the heat as efficently to the load side causing the chamber to heat up the outer surface tripping the high limit. He also said, there was a cleaner HTP recommends I just need to look it up but does anyone have any input.
Thanks Jeffrey

    Sounds to me like...

...some sort of sulfuric compund coating the HX. Apparently, Iron Sulfide is a common LP contaminant. So that could explain the source.

Does the white film come off easy or is it caked on hard?

    build up

Have seen the white layer build up in natural gas appliances as well hope you post the chemical cleaner to remove from heat exchanger , though a pressure washer will work if you can take it outside , gets a little messy trying to do it in place

    Cleaning HX

The folks at NTI are coming out with a cleaning device for the Trinity boiler heat exchangers. Has a round end that covers and seals the plate where the burner attaches. Then you can flush the interior of HX out, draining out through the condensate line. I believe NTI and HTP use the same or similar HX in their condensing boilers, so the device may work for either brand. I don't believe it is out and available yet, but might be - probably early in '05. Greg

    That sounds

    more like a flow issue.

    How is it piped?

I've got quite a few of these in the field and have never encountered this issue.

    Can you post pics?

    Munchkin

Which high limit is this failing out on? If it is an F00, it is most likely not a limit issue at all, but a low voltage (24v) issue. When there is a low voltage problem, the control will fault on its first numerical fault (F00).

Give me a call at 800-323-9651 ext. 157 and I will go into detail.

    Cleaner

This morning I was able to get into the combustion chamber and found lots of rusty debree and a white/green film. After talking to HTP I used CLR cleaner(calcium, lime remover)that I was able to get at the grocery store. It worked great. Mow I am looking into the flow issue. The system is trying to push 20 gpm thru 1 1/4" piping though- which exceeds the 4ft/sec recommendations. The boiler pump is a Taco 0011. Next I am going to throw my analayzer on it and dial it in. I will wait to here the results.
    Thanks Jeffrey

Taco 011 is not big enough for a 20 degree delta on this boiler model. Boiler resistance + minimal piping losses require a #0013. Just did one Saturday- had perfect 20 degree rise across boiler at full fire.

    0011

Taco 0011 is what HTP requires for this boiler, says right in the installatin guide. I used my anaylizer this afternoon the unit was buring very rich so I adjustd and hopefully all is well. Jeffrey

Does the guy who's installed 100's of these...

Happen to own a combustion analyzer? Does he know how to use it? If not, he needs to learn before he creates even more problems...

    Good job.

    Gary...

My mom used to tell me, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all..." I've followed her advice for years, and it has served me well.

This guy came here seeking advice and help, not useless comments. I know you disagree with the product, but I think my moms advice would work well...

It is Rydlyme and can be purchased at www.rydlyne.com

It was formulated for the marine industry to remove calsium depostits from the manafolds. It was private labled a year ago as Marsolve but the compay went under so Apex Engineering put there own lable to it. Rydlyme.
This chemical is the best I have found for the removal of thses deposits

One should not have to spend the money on the devise

We have one and tested it to find it is just as easy to remove the front plate as you would if you were to use the devise and with a spray bottle full of the chemical spray the exchanger then brush lightly rinse with spay bottle of water and presto clean as new it is amazing. This way you can see the results as you clean.

Do you have the circulator on a primary loop feeding the Munchi

only? If not this could be your problem
