I worked on a gravity feed system last week and the system was closed, the expansion tank was in the basement. can some one explain how this is possable? I have bought Dan's books and just started reading.

Later gravity systems
did use that type of tank. It was one way to get higher boiler temperatures which would accelerate the gravity flow.
