Radiant Manifold

Last week finished a new install with Onix and Watts radiant manifolds. Yesterday the home owner informed me of two small leaks. Checked them and found the leaks at the junction of manifold and the branch fitting. These joints were done by the factory and were brazed. This a new one for me and a bit of a pita to rectify, but not difficult, just time consuming.
Since this a factory defect, shouldn't I backcharge Watts for the repair or replacement of the two sections of manifold ?
Curious to know how you guys handle this type of problem ? Jon

    Pictures

Start with pictures of the problem and a note from the customer if you want to persue it. Most cases like that we'd fix it and move on. The time you'll need to spend explaining and complaining will more than use up any allowance. Enjoy....Dan

    In all honesty

those manifolds are pressure tested before they leave the factory. Leaks should be very rare.

More often than not the leak is caused by trying to jam and twist a tight hose to barb connection together. That hose id can vary and sometimes it is a real tough go trying to get them on the barb. I've seen the manifolds actually bend trying to push a tight one on!

It may have been an installation issue, but regardless the rep or manufacture should handle the problem.

This is a small problem compared to some of the rubber hose challanges out there:)

    A small problem

Yes, it is a small problem, but these small problems caused by faulty manufacturing and quality control do a nice job eating into your profit margin by causing needless callbacks to repair something you have no control over. We purchase items that we expect to work properly, and when they are defective at the get-go, we are expected to eat the time wasted to get another part, install and test it. We are not in the business of quality assurance for the manufactors. Hell, in that case, Bill Gates is the Guru of quality assurance with his crappy operating systems.

    Calm down, Jon

I'm not convinced any manufacture is expecting you to "eat the time, install, and test." as you mentioned.

More often than not the manufactures will be glad to make it right. That doesn't always involve dollars, many will give you additional product to offset your time. Some actually "buck up." We see that happen over and over here on the wall with the manufactures.

I still say if you approch the rep, dealer, or manufacture directly if need be (without a chip on you shoulder:) they will take care of this. They don't want problems in the field any more than you do :) They are not out trying to get you!
