Installing a new steam radiator
J. D.
Member Posts: 1
I just finished a renovation and added a bedroom and need to add a new steam radiator to a one pipe system. I had a branch relocated to this bedroom, so all I need is the radiator. I have a building material salvage mill near my home that sells old radiators and need to know what to watch out for, and is there is a way to clean the inside of the radiator before I connect it to the system. Or option two where can I purchase a new radiator, or other options.

First you need to do a heat-loss calculation
to see how much heat is actually needed. Then divide the BTU/hour value by 240 to get the radiator rating in square feet EDR. Make sure your branch line can handle this load.
When you shop, see if the salvage dealer will pressure-test the radiator you choose. 15 pounds is enough for steam. If they won't, you must insist on being able to return it if it leaks.
You can hose out the inside of the radiator to clean it out.
