    banging

Closed zone valves can create a large vacuum, that can suck boiler water up into the mains. You may need to install vacuum breakers after the valves.
  • Banging because of closed zone valves

Firstly in any two pipe steam system with zone valves a steam vacuum breaker should be installed on the boiler trim.

As to installing vacuum breakers on the steam system I don't think you want to do that.

Here is a couple of questions for you.

Does the steam system have a dry return?
Does the system have a wet return and a master steam trap?
Does the system have a condensate receiver or boiler feed pump set?
Does the system have a vacuum pump and tank set in it?

Typically, in two pipe steam systems with zone valves an equalizing line fron the steam main to the main return is installed.

The equalizing line prevents the steam side of the system from developing a greater vacuum than the return side of the system.

As steam condenses in the steam main and the steam main cools when the zone valve is closed the pipng system can go into vacuum. Equalizers on the piping system and vacuum breakers on boilers generally cure this problem.
