Peerless skim plug

An almost identical replacement to what was in there . Which is why I would have loved seeing the old header piped right . I wanted to drop the dry return a little further in black steel , but we were caught off guard with this one - no pictures and a worksheet filled out by a saleman that got the header sizes wrong ( and he forgot to mention the platform at the stairs ) .

The other pic is the factory installed skim plug . Impossible to get out unless you happen to have a huge drive that fits the square hole . Why do they do it ? I had to go with a puny 3/4 skim valve in front .

Comments

  • We replaced this one yesterday

It had a big hole in the back section , about 8 inches above the water line . Someone really took alot of time to pipe the header out - I just wish they piped it right . They also joined the 2 dry returns above the water line .

No choice but to break it all out and start from scratch . We had to split this one in sections to hand carry out of the finished basement . The other pics show why - the landing of the staircase splits the path out . We had to roll the new boiler over the stupid landing to get it past .

Nice looking install Ron, After seeing a lot of the installs you post I was wondering do you advertise as the tight spot specialist? I bet you turn down the nice walk-outs with 8' ceilings because there is no challenge. LOL

    Nice Job

Does your salesman know my salesman??? I wonder if there is one out there who can run a tape measure? Bet it was fun getting over the stairs!! :) Keep up the good work!! I'm doing warm air funaces as of late..:( I hate tin work...
  • I think most salesmen

I should say " salespeople " , need to take a few classes and actually watch the installers work on a few jobs before they start selling . I'ts not that they don't care about the pitfalls , they just don't know what can be an obstruction , or how critical it is to have the right pipe sizes , etc....

Yeah it was fun rolling an ECT , end over end , on the platform . What's that saying ? I'm getting too old for this sh.. . That 1 inch dry return did not come back hot for the 45 minutes we had it steaming . I'm thinking a repipe of the end of that main is in the near future .

Thanks alot Lchmb , sorry to hear about the glut of furnaces . I hate doing em too . Never a job goes by without cutting a finger almost to the bone .
  • Hey Rookie

Me turn down a walkout with tall ceilings ? I actually pray for that kind of home . But they're far and few between over here . Today we replaced an old Slant Fin Malibu under the stairs in a Levitt home . Including cutting the wall to remove the old boiler . And also we had to run a new water main pipe . Most of the job is working on bended knee . Do yourself a favor and wear kneepads while you're still young , never mind the jokes . Thanks alot Rookie .

    Nice job

Once again Ron, it's inspiring to see someone who can make chicken soup out of chicken s**t. We don't have a large breaker bar, so we sacrifice a steel plug by putting the square end in and getting on the threads with a wrench. What do you think of the ect?

    Another nice job

And you added a drop header too. I am amazed how quickly you guys decide what the replacement piping connections will look like and how it all flows in like it was a shop drawing. I would ask the boss to have the salesmen take picture of the before for you. They could use them to show the companies work and you could get an idea of what you were up against. As to the skim plug it's funny as a Burnham thread had the same problem. If you do another Peerless have the boss get you a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar and whatever you need for the square size, I think there's a need for a 3/4 drive square female to fit the male square plugs. Burnham should give one free with each 5 boiler purchases.
  • I tried the plug trick

It kept slipping out when we wrenched it too hard .

Personally, the ECT is my favorite boiler . I guess because it's the one I'm most familiar with ( maybe 1000 or so installed ) . A big cast iron block of efficiency . Heavy as hell though . Thanks alot Todd .
  • The speed of the replacement piping

comes from mine and my buddy Kenny's other life - almost 10 years of installing the JOT and ECT in New York City . Believe me , give a monkey 10 years of this stuff and he'd do a better job than I can . It is fun piping them out though .

I have a big ratchet that'll fit the plug from my dad who worked the tracks in the Jamaica NY subways . It's way too big and heavy to keep on the truck for these special occasions . My new rule is if it's so hard to get out that it hurts , it stays in .

Thank you very much Dale .
