Boiler for hydronic heat

I have a cabin that is being built in upper Michigan. Hydronic heat is being put in the basement floor. Cabin size 16 x 30’ What type of LP boiler would be best to use to keep the 1st floor pipes from freezing. Small kitchen and small bathroom with shower. What I am really asking is there a LP boiler that will not go off if the electricity is down for a day or two?? Thanks Liz

    Hi Liz,

A boiler with a standing pilot will run without electricity but you will also need a way to run your controls and circulating pump too. Would you be willing to install batteries to run the heating system without grid power?

    More concrete

In NW Wisc. the elect. coops go with a foot of concrete for the basement floor with elect. mats. That much well insulated mass takes many days to cool and the extra concrete doesn't cost that much, works just as well if the xtra mass is heated with a boiler. Or, As small as your place is you could put a heater rated gas fireplace with a thermostat in the basement, standing pilot and no elect needed, would easily keep the place above freezing.

if you are heating the floor, a day or two of electricity loss shouldn't be a problem, there should be enough heat stored in the floor to keep pipes from freezing. make sure the basement walls are properly insulated.

ps I've been in houghton for 15 yrs and never known ele. to be out for more than a half a day.
also you could have a standby vented wall heater(non electric) but I would waste the money.
