Indirect Hot Water problem

I am dealing with a 41 gal. Amtrol Indirect coming off a 1952 American Standard Boiler. The circ. is going into the tank on the boiler supply side hot before and after the circ. but the return pipe coming out is cold and stays cold. The pipe before and after the circ. was cool at one point with the circ. itself very hot and still running.
Home owner doesn't have the manual to the Amtrol and all I can get is the set temp., DIFF, & capacity off the digital control, nothing else. I keep getting a EEP reading and I can't see the actual temp. of the water. Control has a mode button, arrow up & arrow down, and a green circ. light.
Taco 007 for domestic circ.. Amtrol is 7 years old. Any thoughts would be appreciated.............ROOKIE

Sounds like the
circulator's blown.
How hard is the water?

sounds like it
is air bound. happends alot in that type of setup. Bleed the loop and it will work untill it gets air in it again. You could try to repipe it so it will not get air bound. good luck0 -
try
try tol purge it. Sounds like it's airbound or a bad pump0 -
Thanks to all for the responces.AIR BOUND it was. I almost condemned the circ. because it sounded so bad. (screw driver to ear, dry and grinding) The air pocket must have been at the pump. I was ready to stop bleeding it when the air finally made it's way through the loop with a recoil hard enough to almost take the hose out of my hand.
Home owner says they never had a problem before and that the city had the street open a week ago working on the water lines. "?"
Thanks Again............ROOKIE0 -
rookie..
What does the city shutting off the water have to do with it? It is a closed system, right? I'd be curious to find where the air came from...Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -
Yes Robert it's a closed loop. Thats why the "?" on the city opening the lines. Everything was bone dry on the tank supply, return, around the pump. 14 psi on the boiler at high limit. Expansion tanks on both the boiler and the indirect OK.
Couple of the post above suggested air as the problem.
Mellow's post called it as it was simply by the way it was piped as being a common cause of air so if I have to eat a call back I will suggest that it is repiped to correct it.
What direction would you consentrate on to prevent future air or to narrow this air in the tank loop down?
Thanks...........ROOKIE0 -
We have used a 3/4 spirovent on the indirect loop and it solved our air problems.0 -
Syrovent
this is a good idea to put in a vent to remove air in a system. I would not put any vents in a system with the old steel expantion tank. The air in that type of system must return to the tank. This is probly what you have and if the amtrol is piped off the relif line or expantion tank line it will have more air problems......You can change the tank or repipe. This would fix it....This pic had the same problem with air and the coil pluged again on the amtrol so we changed the tank.0 -
Nice job mellow that's what I had in mind.Keep those picture coming, before and after pics are great examples of how to correct existing air problems. Nice and compact, great job.0 -
Nice set up. Picture do give nice detail.
This Amtrol is piped off the relief line and will probably have nothing but quick fixes for the rest of the season.
There was mention of the 1952 American Standard getting replaced after this season. But then again I'm sure that has been said before over the last 52 years. I'll keep the vent and repiping ideas close by.
Thanks Again..........ROOKIE0
