Got up in the wee hours this a.m to drive 75 miles to put in a Bock HW heater for a friend of 25 years.. Got to the job and while unloading my tools slipped and broke my ankle in three places and dis-located what was left. OUCH !!!!!!! Was a pleasure when they snapped it back into place. Surgery to install some pins Tuesday. What is it you say Dan, never work for your church, family, or friends??? Oh well, forced vacation for the next couple of weeks.

Geeze Tommy,
Never mind the pain, blood, pins and lost time.
Does your friend have hot water or not?
I'm kidding, of course. We hope you're okay and heal quickly. In some macabre way, I'm almost envious however.
"Hey Hon, I can't work for a month and I'll be sitting on the sofa with my leg up, watching TV for the next 30 straight days, do we have any beer in the fridge"?
"How about that tree, think you can put it up by yourself this year"? "If any snow falls, could you help dig us out"?
"Could ya Hon"?

YIKES
Having just returned from a friend's house to install a gas stove for free I'm scared....Hope it heal's fast!!!0 -
Actually,
I never even made it in the door. Got the heater in on the hand truck and went back out for my tools. Hit an algae covered piece of 4x4 wood that was separating stone beds. Bone protruded but did not break the skin. So to answer your question, they'll be running off of the old heater for awhile until I get my sidekick up there to install for me. Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I know, I know, "break a leg" right? I'm going stir crazy already. I just started reading Lost Art(my newest version)again and I always get something new out of it. THAT should keep me sane.0 -
Wait until the
percocet wears off.
Oh boy.

Yeah Ken
I've been waiting. They gave me three Percs and a shot of demerol in the hospital. It took awhile but it finally kicked in. Keeping pain at bay with 2 percs every 4 hours. So far so good but sleep should be interesting.0 -
Broke
a Golden Rule, Tommy. And that's not all. Sorry, pal. ;-)Retired and loving it.0 -
percs have severe side effects.
you would be wanting to start eating los of fibre and drink plenty of water if you are on them long............

Seems to me
you weren't working for a friend but doing a "favor".
A very big one.
One question, if you don't do favors for "friends, family or Church, who do you do them for?
Very sorry for your pain and suffering. Get well quick.

Jack
I dont think its favors for a friend , I think its dont WORK for friends. If it was a favor it probably wouldnt have happened. Isn't that usually the way it goes?0 -
Did that ankle thing myself in
1972, but not at least on a freebie, ooooouch! Was on the clock, so comp all the way.
Watch that boredom thing, it's bad and you can absolutely go nuts when you're used to working the way we do.
Buy lots of books and read one tech book and one fun book every day. It helped me get through it and made me smarter.
Send me your address and I'll send one along to get you started. Stay well and I'm sorry for your discomfort.0 -
Sorry to hear...
...you got hurt and hope that you will recover soon. It's always the good guys that get hit with things like that.
Although it really is terrible to miss a couple of weeks worth of work (and maybe income) but helping a friend out is and should be an honorable thing to do. You never know when or if you ever be on the other end. It just sucks when that goes bad.
You're a hero.

Yeah, but...
I just know Curt Schilling would have still gotten that heater in!
Tough luck, Tommy - hope it heals, don't push your recovery.0 -
worse than expected
Just came from ortho man. Shin bone broke off at the end. Shattered ankle and socket. Surgery tomorrow a.m. to install titanium plates then six weeks completely off of it. Is there a shot at making the titanium into some sort of heat emitter? How could we pipe that? Kind of like Hot Rods Hydronic Headboard. Then 4 to 6 month recovery/therapy. Anyone have any good news for me? Mrs. not thrilled.0 -
OUCH!!!!!
Well Tommy, like my Mom always said, if you are going to do a job, make sure you do a good job. And man....sounds like you did one hellofa job on that ankle.
Good luck with the surgury
I pray all turns out as good as it can

man
I feel for ya Tommy. My sister was picking up her dtr. at a girl scout event and tripped on some brats skate board. Broke both bones in her upper leg and fractured her ankle. good luck and best wishes J.Lockard0 -
broken bones
A buddy of mine had a cat that got outside and some dogs started chasing it. His wife jumped off their porch to save the cat from the dogs and broke both ankles. The cat continued to run from the dogs and was run over by a car.
Go Figure

WOW !!! Boston GC is right !
I see what you mean about the Percs and the fiber. Looks like shredded wheat for the forseeable future.0 -
Set goals
Just like at work, what books have you always wanted to read but didn't have the time. Dan's reading list at the left takes out alot of the guesswork if you need a start. People speak spanish where you work? Get the language tapes. Is you will updated? What's the extra stuff you got worth on ebay? Tired of reading but tired of the TV rot? Books on tape or CD free from the library. If Lance Armstrong came back from Cancer to win so can we all. Good luck Dasvedania0 -
The good news
is that you will be able to spend some time with the Misses. Now to help you with getting better.I have been where you are at shattered right foot in headon six years ago was out 10 months the vet told me 12 to 18.First read and get rested up, talk with the misses like never before this is probrably the first time you have seen each other this much, next get off peroset as fast as possible you do not sleep the same on that stuff and last when the vet sends you for therapy give it hell everyday,if you have private health insurance make sure that the p/t place gets you in everyday your p/t is only good 60 days not 60 visits. My prayers are with you0 -
tommyoil I feel for you man sorry to here this happened to you but I want to give you some real good advice and this may be hard for you. my friend lost his back and his eyes and he had no one to help him so he lives with me now and I do everything for him. what I really want to say from experience is get off the drugs A.S.A.P they will help in the short term. but in the long term they will kill you.
everytime I take my friend to the pain doctor to get his morphine pump refilled. the whole waiting room is filled with good people at one time but have lost there minds today. you would have to see it to believe it.
they use the meds for pain but the meds just cover up the pain so you can hurt more and do things to your ankle
that makes it worst.
the best thing you can do is go to physical therapy as much as you can. it will be hard but trust me exercise
is the best medication. and will make you stronger
the people I see in the waiting room don't do anything but take pills and sit around all day and that will not get you better and stronger.
from what I see you have a lot off good friends on this wall that care about you. so don't worry about anything. but getting better. they all have you covered in the mean time but we all wish you the best. and be strong you will make this you just have to try everyday to get stronger.
good luck tom
ps I come to this wall everyday and I am dieing to get into the hvac field im 27 and smart. was not given in live an opportunity to go to school but I am saving now to go to new England tech. but I have to say it's going to be a nice trade for me if I have to work in the field with nice people like you I come on this board every day and learn allot
thanks everyone for this board :-)0
