failure of new residential steam boiler

A friend of ours had replaced an old oil fired steam boiler with new about two years back. The boiler (156 MBH steam hear output)lasted about a year and it cracked. It was replaced with a new Peerless EC/ECT04-175 boiler a year back and this one also cracked about 2 weeks back.

What could cause it to keep cracking frequently?

They had primary low water cut off (LWCO)/automatic cold water feed and also a secondary LWCO?

It is a one pipe steam heating system serving a two story old building.

Any help/comments are greatly appreciated.

If they have an auto-feeder,

yuck, look for leaking vents and or returns. #1 problem.

Probably wasn't piped properly

On a steam boiler, the piping around the boiler is critical. Improper piping often causes poor operation and cracking. You need to check the existing piping to see if it meets the manufacturer's specs.
