I have and oil burning steam boiler.
I tuned on the t-stat today , no heat I checked the sys,and pressed the reset button on the Carlin burner, It ran for a minute, with a flame and them shut down on the reset again.
I have 1/2 full oil tank, and am gettin plenty of oil.
Im a plumber, not an oil burner tech. any Ideas.

the points
Sounds like the points need to be adjusted. Every few years the points wear off and you have to reset them with your feeler guage.0 -

Questions
Does it run with flame right up until the moment of lockout? OR does it lose flame along the way (as if the oil is being restricted) and then die out. If it quits with full flame at lockout it sounds like a dirty /defective cad cell eye or associated wiring. Or possibly the control itself.0 -
Hello Al
Al if you hit the reset and it ran up to the safty time 45 sec. with a astablished flame, try this take a set of jumpers or a sckrew driver hit the reset and jump out the
F+F terrminels and see if it keeps running past the safty time if not its probly the control if it keeps going and dose not shut down its the lead or the cad cell ...David0 -
Could be a number of things.
Points (electrodes) are only one possiblility.
COUld be plugged nozzle, bad burner transformer, dirty cad cell, bad primary control, or other.
Unless you have a a lot of time and money, to just start replacng all the moving parts, it would be cheaper to get someone to fix it who can determine which part is needed. Usually will only take min. service call to troubleshoot and fix.....unless you have a lot of other problems too.
