Sprinter Vans

We have two of them , among other vehicles. Ours are 3500 dual wheel sprinters 140 whb high roof. These are the best vans on the planet period. Sure guys will argue a big 16ft box on a cab over is bigger , fine. That's not what we're talking about though. Compared to typical vans or a cab chassis with a single wheel Spartan box there is no comparison. A sprinter turns tighter than any other van, you can stand inside, it gets twice the fuel mileage, Routine service like brakes is very easy. The biggest plus is it's a Mercedes, bullit proof drive line and chassis. Problems? We have one that is blowing a fuse on the auto door locks every once in awhile but that's about it. Finding snow tires for the 15 dual wheels has been tedious, iwish they where 16 like the single wheels. Last year ours started at -15f but it was close, this year we're adding block heaters.

    ????

    Mileage? city/hwy.

    Maintenance interval?

How do they go in the snow? Better, about the same or worse than a regular van?

How many miles do you have on them and what year are yours?

Ours are dual wheel they hold 5000 pounds. that's overkill for our needs the single wheel would be fine. However I was able to get a deal on two left over 2002 so Iwent for it. we've had one over a year with 30k miles on it. Got the other one in the spring. They get 20-21 pretty much all the time. I've heard of guys getting up to 26 with single wheel models. oil changes in the manual can be as long as 10,ooo miles. i don't by that myself . we are going 6500 with Mobile 1 which I run in All my vehicles. Ours have traction controll which helps out , they will spin both sets of rears unlike the crappy single trac Fords. The big problem in the snow is the tires on the dual wheel models have o grip. They are srictly a summer tire. I just found some Verdestrien snows which should help alot.

a sprinter. Besides being pretty narrow, they have no side compartments....BIG downside.I don't know how I did w/o them for so long...I have a single wheel spartan w/ a GMC truck. I have had it about a year and like every thing about it but the gas milage.(about 13mpg) kpc

If I may add, the trucks were originally sold as Freightliners, and later sold by Dodge.
  • 20 to 21 MPG ?

Wow . I get about 10 to 12 in my 2004 Ford E350 with the V8 Triton . Would you know the ballpark price for the single wheel version ?

    Expensive

Repair parts and maintenance work is very expensive. Options needed on the original purchase can run the price up very high and that is before you furnish and install your shelving.

    More info

Yes all Sprinters are Diesel it is a 5cyl inline Mercedes motor. The parts are not anymore outragous than anything else you buy from a dealer. keeping in mind that dealers are always more than your locale auto parts store. I don't think they where bad at all. The Factory Mercedes oil filter is like 8-10 bucks. Front rotors (bought a spare set) where 68$ each from the dealer. You can buy a single wheel low roof for around 28k. I was out the door with the dual wheels for 30k. That is not outrageous. How much less is a single wheel Spartan Van on a Ford or Chevy chassis? 24K?? We are saving over 200$ a month on fuel per van. So who cares if the payments higher? Incedently they are now importing cab/chassis models so you can get an aftermarket box if you want. The inside width is the same as a regular van.
