hi for cooling is a 2ton air hanlder 24,000 btu
and what would a 2 ton with 180 deg of hotwater going through it be for heating

and will 2 1/2 ton give more cfm for heating then a 2 ton
thanks

    Couple of things...

The air handler will be rated for a certain air flow and ductwork. The total rating is a function of sensible and latent heat removal, which may or may not be the actual mix the AH will encounter in a given environment. IIRC, the usual sensible vs. latent heat mix for a matched tonnage set is 70/30%.

Depending on the local environment, it may actually make sense to install AH that have a different tonnage rating than the condenser to get the sensible/latent mix just right for local conditions. The specs of air conditioners and their AH will have all that data in their documentation. Getting said data can be difficult as most manufacturers hide it away from consumers.

Air flow requirements go up with tonnage capacity. Something like 350-450 CFM/ton across the coil for cooling seems to be the norm. Naturally, you'll need larger ductwork to take advantage of that extra blower capacity or you'll simply waste it while listening to the ductwork "singing".

As for the heating capacity of a coil with 180°F input temp, that depends on the manufacture of said coil, etc. However, it shouldn't be impossible to get the same input rating from a hot water coil. After all, if it's operating at 180°F with an incoming air temp in the 70-80's, that's a lot of ΔT to play with.

    Hi,

Most air handlers have more capacity for heating than they do for cooling. A 2 ton unit may have 40,000 btu or higher rating in the heating mode.

If you oversize the air handler for cooling, make sure that you can turn down the cfm low enough for the A/C mode.

    a 2 ton ahu

is only going to give about 36000 to 40000 btu of heating and 800 cfm of airflow in the cooling or heating season. the air handler has to be sized for the cooling load. once sized for the cooling load, the heating coil will be oversized for your space but you can always lower the water temp to 140 deg. the air hanlder manufacturers web site should give you the cooling and heating coil data you need.
