The 2109
In my experience has been nearly bulletproof. It has, if memory serves me right, a fuse to protect the low voltage innards. Shouldn't be a problem.0 -

The R2109 and R2107 are quite reliable, but voltage shorts can cause some issues. I would suggest putting a jumper wire on the "T T" terminals before hooking the thermostat wires to them. If the burner circuit doesn't pull in when jumped, then the module in the R2109 is shot. Do not replace the whole control! The R2109 has a seperate module for the low voltage.
