Just got back from a very exciting Nascar race in Atlanta(with seats overlooking the flag stand) and had this in my email.... thought I would pass it on as I had promised that I would.

Ultra Settings
Did WM think of just about everything, or what? I was concerned about two things; boost feature, and the fact my boiler was oversized. They seemed to have taken care of both. Very happy WM customer. Reynz0 -

It appears to me, after reading the information, that if the Maximum fan speed on my Ultra 155 is reduced from 5200 to about 3000 (52% of maximum), it would reduce the amount of intake BTUH and actually cause the 155 to operate as an Ultra 80. The book indicated "if the boiler is oversized for space heating, you can reduce the maximum fan speed during space heating operation, parameter 13, to limit the maximum boiler input". In a nutshell, a downward adjustment on an oversized boiler can prevent short cycling. Good idea?
Secondly, I'm thinking about adjusting the outdoor reset curve. If I do, what is the design Outdoor Design Temperature used in heat/loss calculations on the East Coast? I suspect it may be about 0*. Am I correct?0 -
That would work...
IF.....you wanted to keep the boost feature, then I would limit the BTU output of the boiler and make it so that it wouldn't reach the high limit as quickly. In my mind I would go about the same thing in a different way.......
Leave the fan speed alone, espec. if you have an indirect hooked to the boiler, then it can satisfy that much more quickly.
Change the boost time to 0... effectively taking that out of the equation. Now set up your boiler for a reset curve that will be at say 120@ 60 outdoor and 180 @ 0. Don't use a setback t-stat, or if you do don't set it back much, you will not have extra btu's for recovery, but by doing this you won't need to set back and you will actually have better eff. by not setting back. If you have too much heat and your boiler is still cycling at these temps. lower the 0 outdoor temp. to say 160.... if you then have to little heat go up a bit till it keeps up. now you have found your balance point and the best operating range for the boiler. You will find that your boiler will be running most of the time if not all the time in very cold weather, but it will be running in the lower end of the modulating range. This boiler will get ou the best eff. in that range, even when it is running at higher temps.
So I hope you have been able to follow my logic here... I know what I'm thinking, but very often I have a hard time relating that espec. through writing......
In short.... no don't cut back the fan speed, you don't have too and it will not gain you anything...... Yes...0 will work but the East coast is a big area... the mountains need 0 and the shore areas will rarely get much below 10 or 15... play with the temps. and the curve to find what works for you... running the boiler at a low fire ie....30K BTU for 24 hours straight will still be more eff. than banging it on and running it up to 155 and off again 2 or 3 times an hour....
The reset curve is another way to make your mod. boiler "smaller".

Very Interesting. This is what I did, and I believe I understood what you meant...
-I set boost time to 0.
-Left fan speed at 3000 (about 80 BTUH, I don't have an indirect)
-Set curve at 110@60 to 158@10 (Outdoor design for this area is 10*, and I was operating at 152@17* last year)
I know I asked for your opinion, but this isn't too far off from what you were saying, is it?0 -

Seperatre CH and DHW
For reference, the max fan speed for a CH (heating) call and DHW (hot water) call are independent. Therefore you can 'dial down' the max output for CH and keep max output for DHW.0 -

Absolutely Excellent!
I could not be more satisfied with the boiler operation.
The boiler slowly heats the water up to the target temp. for the current outside temp and shuts off without overrunning the thermostat.
When I set my thermostat on 71*, it sticks to 71. I have zero fluctuation.
The current tempature curve with the target temp for 0* outside (design day) set at 170* seems to be working great.0
