The Crown Freeport is not quite............hb

but a beautiful boiler nonetheless. Other than Viessmann, it's the only other oil fired boiler I offer. Since they now offer the horizontal Mega Stor, it really makes a cool package.

We started this one up on Friday. Two radiant temperatures, slab and ThermoFin joist bay, Runtal rads on the second floor and DHW. This fellow immediately hired us upon seeing one of our other projects before he knew the price. He installed every foot of tubing and we did the mechanicals. Win - Win.

Nice install. But with all that room, why did you go with a horizontal Mega Stor.

The best for less and WITHOUT concern for performance! Great job!

    Sweet looking work Pal.

When did you find out they make a horitonal ? I like the smaller foot print.

Whats the deal with the white boxs for the wirsbo controls ? Why not just use Tekmars ? Where do the 1" ( 1 1/4" ?) copper pipes go behind the boiler ?

Come on dude, out with it :)

As we have all come to expect Jeff, great work. The glove has been thrown :) I'll have to get the camara out.

But is it BETTER or CHEAPER than a vert. Mega Stor?

BTW, even my own personal system has a horizontal tank under the boiler but it is because I had no room for anything else. It's a real pain to work on in it's cramped space.

    Thanks, Lobsta'.

I believe Crown came out with the horizontal 42 & 53 tanks about a year ago. I'll use a horizontal tank every chance I get. Makes a great boiler base, allowing easier access to the burner and components. Performance is about the same and some horizontal tanks (Viessmann) actually perform better than the vertical ones. But you would actually have to look at the tech data to know that ;-) Does it cost more, less or equal? Who cares, it's cleaner this way.

Why would I use Tekmar stuff when I have access to Wirsbo equipment? Besides, I'm not a big fan of the Tekmar rep agency, if you recall from a previous post. The white boxes just house the miriad of wires required.

The 1" piping from the Low Loss Header to the boiler goes to the rear where the supply and return are located. Also, when using a horizontal indirect, there is almost always less piping material needed since all the tappings in such close proximity to each other.

    Low Loss Header

    Curious...

Is such considered the norm with a Crown boiler?

Do you use it because of the way it ensures that boiler return temperature is equal to system return temperature?

    My My My

The Low Loss Header is very sweet for the piping.Makes for a convenient install.I dare not ask if it is cost effective;)............Seems like ordinary plywood rips for the manifolds are a tad bit caddy!Lemme guess...........the HO mounted up the manifolds?

    Outstanding work and well laid.

What is the small black thing in the top left with the red light in it? It looks like a Wirsbo zcm but seems too small. BTW-very nice work!!

    Actually.......

I use the low loss header to elevate return water temperatures. The boiler pump runs on any call for heat from the 311 so it blends hot water with the cool radiant water.

The low loss header also serves as the system main air eliminater. Plus it's the best place for my brass plaque!

    Think I Get it Now

As long as flow on the boiler side is greater than the system side you'll get some boiler supply feeding back to the boiler return.

Once system side flow meets or exceeds the boiler side, (more system circulators running) your boiler return temp will be the same as system return temp.

    Right?

    Diamonds

Diamond plate is absolutly faaaaaaaabulous. I've wanted to do that for years but Steve doesn't like it for some reason. One of these days I'm going to have to overrule him

    Curious..

with those tekmars and all that wiring.... why not a Viessmann Vitorond with a Vitotronic 200/300 controll. i'm guessing the price is not that much different by the time all the labor is added in. Not that i'm trying to be critical or anything because that looks great!!! It's been awhile since I priced a Crown out. Did you do the math both ways?? Respond to email if you could, pricing out here in the open just confuses people.
