Rinnai hot water heater

I will be installing a radaint floor heating system in my house next summer. I have a Rinnai continuum continuous hot water heater right now. I am thinking of using it for my heat source it's rated to 180,000 btu's. I will be using a heat exchanger for the radaint system. Does anyone have any comments or advice.

Can't comment on the technical aspects of this type of setup, but you might take a look at your Rinnai warranty and that might give you an indication of what Rinnai thinks of this use for their equipment. If I remember the heat exchanger goes from a 10 year warranty to 3 years, and other parts go from 5 years to 3 years.

Check with your AHJ, and/or insurance company, but I believe the water heater needs to be listed for space heating purpose, and there are subtle but probably important changes made to the "SH" (for Space Heat) line of Seiscos.

I checked, only the commercial model was certified for hydronic applications (don't know why).

The manufacturer specifies a pump that can handle 6 gpm @ 30 feet of head to overcome the pressure drop of the heat exchanger; that's a BIG pump that costs a lot to operate. You should factor this in when determining overall efficiency.

If you've got over 1,000 [] of space to heat, I would recommend a good quality, high efficiency boiler like a Munchkin.

I was planning on using just one pump for the system with 3-way valves for zone control anyway but that is good info.
