Clanging rads

Hi, I have a new (to me) old house (1890's) with large cast iron rads and a modern boiler. When the temperature changes (up and down) in the rads, they all clang very loud. The holes the pipes go through are plenty large. I have installed some auto vents on the top floor rads. I don't believe it is air causing this anymore. I have given up on the modern thermostat's program and am now holding the temp at 20C. Still some clanging when the heat is called. Can i install an aquastat (i think) to constantly hold the recirc water at say 35C and run it parallel to the thermostat upstairs?

Can you post a picture of what a "broken up" radiator looks like. It would be interesting to see. If what you say has ANY merit the 100+ year old radiators I see every day are replacements??? Please explain as I dont get it. And as for you John, I would put the idea of buying new rads on hold for awhile. At least until we get to the bottom of what a broken up radiator is.0 -
thanks, i think? So is clanging normal?0
