Looks like we just about have this one wrapped up! We still need to add one more Gorton #2 on the end of the steam main and do one more look over. Today we actually flushed out the entire return and found a lot of blockages throughout the system. Only problem is the system started to hammer after we did this. I am hoping once she cycles off and all the water gets to where it needs to be she will settle back down.
I just wanted to thank Dan and Steamhead for answering all the questions I tossed there way!

Beautiful steamwork Jamie
Can you tell us about the function of the piping connected to the equalizer , behind the boiler ? Looks too complicated for me to figure out on my own . I get the banging also when I steam out the returns , it goes away eventually .
I just passed through Philly Sunday . I gotta say it has the cleanest looking interstate of a major city I've seen . Wish I had time to stop for a cheese steak .0 -
Ron,
That's our false water line, found on pages 28 to 31 in "The Lost Art of Steam Heating."
In Dan's words,
"The false water line creates an artifical boiler water line at a higher level by lifting the end of the dry return up so it will fill with water."
