the top cover should be open for convection, the front cover gives it a chimney effect, to get move convective velocity, also, if exposed the front cover also serves a radiant heat source, to people and objects in its line of sight, I just love the tall baseboards because of this, more surface, means more radiant

Does the performance (heating output) of a finned tube system increase or decrease when the cover is removed?
In other words, does the cover promote convection across the fins or is it there just for protection?0 -
The cover increases the output provided it is not blocked on the bottom and the damper flap is open.0 -
covers increase output
The model I checked was 10% less output, without covers.
