big noise when the burner starts
Val , HVAC technician

I have installed an outdoor reset control on a 1,000,000 Btu/hr H.B. SMITH cast iron hot water boiler. The boiler has a standing pilot. We cleaned the burners with the brush and vacuumed them but when the boiler starts makes a loud noise.I am assuming we have gas leaking inside the burner compartment but I don't know what to do next. The boiler is over 25 years old and had a leak fixed with boiler seal.
Thanks for your help Val

Gas leak
The idea of a standing pilot is to ignite any gas coming in. You have alot of input for one pilot light so I'm guessing this may be some sort of power burner with a flame safeguard system. If on the other hand this is a long string of burners on a manifold it's not too unusual that some near the pilot burner light and the ones farther away don't right away. Check the gas pressure to the manifold and make sure it's at spec as soon as the main valve is powered. If the burners are in good shape and the cross lighter slots clean and aligned I would suspect a slow opening gas valve. Be sure to check the inlet and outlet pressure to the valve before you change anything. I say valve but now a million input would be 2 valves in series.0 -

big noise
Thanks for help. I have learned a lot from this site.
The standing pilot is at the edge of the burners and yesterday I have cleaned some obstructed orrifices near the pilot. The noise is very similar to a small explosion.0 -
