Can't kill the trace

Ok, here's the deal. New Pierless EC/ECT-06-300 Steam.
Carlin 102CRD, 2-5/8 tube, 3 gph 60B Del Nozzle
Air band wide open, A dimension set at 9 (per Pierless set up guide).

Here are combustion readings from T325M

FT 546
O2 5.6%
EFF 82.2%
C02 11.5%
CO 23 ppm
EX/A 33.9

I even gave it another 10% excess air and still can not
get a 0 smoke reading. Lets call it a trace, or .5, as its
less than '1' but still significant. Only thing not corrected yet is high draft due to 50' chimney. about 03-04
over fire. I am at loss as to why I can not get a 0 smoke.

    carlin

try sliding the firing assembly in a little further and see if the flame cleans up.

If the draft is that high

the flame may be starting to pull off the head, which would make it smoky.

Try a second draft regulator. I did and it works nicely.

    and

Have you changed your nozzle yet??? It could be screwed up. For giggles I tried 5 or 6 nozzels in my boiler and got slightly different readings everytime , same size, same style, go figure. You can also slow the draft down with a slide cut into the flue. but I'd try adjusting the drawer 2nd after nozzle.
  • Checked the ECT specs

I got them on my computer for reference . The ECT 6 with a 102CRD can be fired with a 2.25 or a 2.50 60 degree B Delevan . You're overfired with the 3.00 . Do you know what the pump pressure is set at ?

Also , like Steamhead said , add another draft regulator to bring down that draft to maybe - .01 if you can .

    Kill the trace

AS I said in my original message, the pierless installation
guide gave the settings for using the carlin 102crd. Which
was air wide open, head at .9,3gpm 60b del nozzle. Of course
the carlin oem book said for same same appliance model...
    EC/ECT-06-300 2.5 gph 60 b del, pump at 150 psi, shutter
open, head 8. I tried this and got almost exact combustion
numbers, with same trace of smoke...go figure. Thats actuall
3.06 gpm. So, back to the draft issue. I guess that with the
flame being pulled out away from the head, some atomized
droplets do not get burned completely, or are unburned droplets hitting the target wall and thats causing the smoke.?? Wada than think??
  • Either Peerless revised their manual very recently

or your numbers are wrong for the nozzle size . Just to be sure , I checked the Peerless website and they do show the Carlin at either 2.25 or 2.50 gph nozzle . Why not try the lower size if the right draft doesn't fix it ?

    Nozzle size

Yeah, but 2.50 nozzle at 150psi delivers 3.06 gph, slightly
higher than 3.00 at 100 psi. I tried this and still got the
trace smoke. I must reduce the draft and see what happens.
    thanks for the help.
