Package boiler or knockdown?

I need a new steam boiler - I only have a staircase with a 27.5 inch wide clearance down to the basement. I could get a knockdown or I could get the largest package that will fit which is 200,000 BTU (slant fin) - the professional told me that he thought that size would work, but that if it did not then you could install a second package boiler and link them -

can you link two package boilers? - is that inefficient?

the house is in NJ - three floor wood victorian - ppor insulation - 3500 sg ft heated - 15 radiators - each one unusual and some beneath the main floor making heat loss measuremnts imprecise.

should be plenty of room to fit that size boiler down the stairs . We buy most of our boilers knockdown , with the jacket off so we don't damage it when it goes down . Is it oil or gas ?

    I agree

with Ron on this one. (since he's the king of "shouldn't fit there") I would size the boiler to what is needed and bring in a knockdown unit. Why pay for a boiler and install to find out you need to add a second because the first isn't big enough? On top of which you will probably find out in January when your freezing!! IMHO..:)

correct size or just take a shot

put the proper size boiler even if you have to assemble section by section. installing a new boiler is only done every 20 years or so [ some do last 100 years though ] you might as well do it correctly.
