chimney liner

We have an old house with old coal fired boiler that was retrofitted to burn oil. There is also a gas HWH.

The boiler has dies and now must be replaced.

I am aware that if I make a gas conversion I will need to line the chimney but am wondering if this is also the case should I decide to stay with oil.

Thanx

re-lining is safer no matter what you do...

and once you reline - look into the new oil burners like slant-fin's interpid, "system 2000" series from energy kinetics, and one from Buderus's, to name a few

you have gas and oil venting together??? bad idea -

concider an indirect hot water tank off the oil burner the "system 2000" includes that!!

    Rads

Depending on where you live the current per therm cost of oil may be less or more than nat gas. If you already have a gas water heater the piping is already there. For the future have a heat loss done and decide for your type of rads if a gas condensing boiler is worthwhile. The ones that use 100% outside air for combustion lessen your cold air infiltration. This is the least cost fuel option if you can have return temps low enough to use it. Reline and correctly size the chimney liner whatever you do.
