Hello, I am having problems controlling the distribution of the heat from one room to the next. Reading in one of Time life self help books it states that each register should be filled with water at the beginning of every heating season. By doing this it willof course drain down to the boiler. The only thing though I remember my installer telling me that the water level within the sight glass should not reach above a certain height. I have each register pitch towards the inlet but the only time I get heat in certain rooms is with the bleeder valve completely removed. I have gone as far as swapping bleeder valves from a working register to non working with the same results. My next move is to fill the individual registers but I would just like a second oppinion before I take that route. By the way I am still waiting from a call back from the mfg of the boiler for clarifiction to.
Thank YOu in advance.

call a professional
That's what keeps the economy going. Steam radiators don't get filled with water, you have mixed up your info for the wrong system, hydronics. Make sure you get someone that is versed in steam heat and explain the problem, you may have a pipng problem or vent problem but if the other radiators are getting hot your boiler may be ok. Balancing a steam system on the other hand takes patience, if this is your problem you may need to adjust your vents on each radiator, try setting the ones that get hot first on a low setting and the others higher, there are so many variables you may need to call in a professional.0 -
the vents that I have are suppose to be self bleeders where they don't have adj. knobs on them should I be starting from that point first by getting adjustable vents. And you to get this straight the registers themselves do not need to filled with water?0 -
Not in a steam system
The only parts that hold water are some pipes in the basement and the boiler itself.
It would be best to have a pro come in and go over the system with you. He or she could answer any questions you might have. Try the Find a Professional page of this site to locate one near you. If you're in the Baltimore area, e-mail me!
