two pipe system / severe hammering

I HAVE A 2 PIPE STEAM SYSTEM, OLD STYLE (EARLY 1900'S PLUMBING), WITHOUT THE STEAM TRAPS ON THE RADIATORS. A LOCAL PLUMB / HEAT COMPANY INSTALLED A NEW WEIL MCCLAIN 300,000 BTU STEAM BOILER INTO THE EXSISTING PLUMBING 3 YEARS AGO. I HAVE OWNED THE HOME FOR A LITTLE LESS THEN A YEAR..... I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WHEN THE BOILER SHUTS DOWN, I GET EXTREME WATER HAMMER. I HAVE CHANGED OUT THE MAIN BLEEDER AT THE END OF THE LINE, FLUSHED THE BOILER MANY TIMES, I EVEN HAD SOMEONE DOWNSIZE THE HEAT APPLIED TO THE BOILER BY PLUGGING SOME OF THE HEAT TUBES ON THE GAS RACK. TRIED EVERYTHING I KNOW TO STOP THE HAMMERING, WITH NO LUCK. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.

Go to the Books section of this website and order "We got Steam Heat", by Dan H. Read it and in there you will probably find the source of your problem as well as learn a bit about the beauty that is steam heat.....

I would look into the pressuretrol setting. Is there a possibility that the boiler is shutting down on pressure and the banging that you are hearing is a product of that?

Is this an early Vapor system

or does it have two shutoffs and an air vent on each radiator?

is the boiler surging violently in the gauge glass? maybe the installer didnt add boiler surging treatment and skim the boiler. or maybe there is water getting trapped in improperly pitched feed pipe

Tom, I'm currious. It sounds like we have very simular systems, only mine is 50,000 btus. larger. I'm interested in how many burners were removed from your boiler, have you seen much benift and do you have any issues with having that done.
