2 pipe steam w/ dry returns?

We are working on a two pipe steam system which has dry returns and it looks as if someone has made random changes to its integrity. The steam mains are hung along the basement ceiling with the returns below them approximately 10". Someone has installed a F & T trap at the end of the steam main and connected to the return. Should this have been done this way? I have also noticed that the only venting on the entire system is at the radiators.

    Two-pipe steam

Sounds OK, since the F&T also vents air (ensure that it does, don't take it for granted). Once the main is filled with steam, the the rads vent next.

Are you sure that the rads have no condensate returns? If not, you essentially have a one-pipe system with an elevated wet return protected by the F&T, if you know what I mean.

    Jamie, is this Vapor

or 2-pipe air-vent? If it's Vapor, that F&T does the same job as those crossover thermostatic traps on Dunham, Hoffman, Webster and other Vapor systems. The radiator vents may have been added by a non-heating man.

If it's 2-pipe air-vent, that F&T is unusual but it could work OK. However I'd switch to a standard main vent setup.

BTW, I got your message VERY late last night.......
