I have a small crack in my steam boiler - one plumber says I must replace the boiler (a 1975 Weil-Mclain) - does the Hercules product call Boiler Solder actually work - should I try it?

boiler solder or not
don't even bother. if by chance it does work it will eventually fail and at the least opportune moment. it will also destroy your steam piping and cause you enough trouble that you will either sell the house or comtemplate suicide.0 -
That boiler is on it's last legs, let it RIP
There are plenty of great boilers out there that'll offer a higher efficiency than your old boiler. Replace it while you're ahead, it's given you over 25 years of service. The V8 series from Burnham looks like a super steamer if you happen to use oil as a fuel.0 -
Boiler Solder
Jonathan,
Boiler solder has it's place. Like if your boiler cracks in the middle of a blizzard when it is -10 degrees on a weekend. Other than that, it is a temp cure at best, and it will gum up the system.
Boiler solder reminds me of that tiny little spare tire that you see in some new cars. Would you consider putting one of those spare tires on, and drive across the desert??? That would be comparable to putting in boiler solder, and going into the winter.
Listen to the man who wants to do the job right, and replace the boiler.

I wouldn't do it and expect it to last very long.
I shouldn't say I WOULDN'T use it, but I'd be sizing up and pricing out a new boiler and some piping, as soon as I got back to the office....0
