Does every radiator need a vent?

My knowledge of this subject is extremely limited, thanks to Dan, I now have 3 of his books that I have been studying. I have not found any knowledgeable person that is willing to answer my questions about steam heaat in my town so here I am. I have two questions. First off, Does every radiator need a valve? Where can they be purchased from? and the second question is that I have noticed in my home that the supply lines to a radiator will have a branch off of it right before it goes into the radiator to another radiator, this , i think is causing the radiator off of the branch to only heat half way? does this sound correct? Any help is needed

Thanks

    Hi Eric

If you have a one pipe steam system, then every radiator needs an air vent. Steam can't get in if the air can't get out.

As for the radiator that heats only half-way, it may be a venting issue. During the spring and fall, you may find that some of your radiators do not heat all the way. This is because the amount of heat required to keep your home at a given temperature during "milder" outdoor temps can be delivered with only a few sections heating. Each section has a certain amount of BTU capacity, which is how they were sized.

Does the culprit radiator never fully heat up?
