Smart 40 indirect T&P valve?

Hi, I have a XL100 watts T&P valve, and the smart 40 tank calls for a XL100-8 WAtts T&P vavle will the one I have work? thanks

    The XL-8 has an 8" probe. Use that instead of the one you have.

    It says that it needs to be know further down then 6 inches in the water jacket on teh watts instrutcions, How do i know how far down it is going? the Water heater calls for teh 8 though.
