can steam boiler also service hot water baseboard?

we are replacing our steam boiler and we have one room with electric heat. I was told that the electric heat could be replace by hot water baseboard and be serviced off the steam boiler - is that possible?

Also - I was told that the new steam boiler would probably result in banging even though we don't have banging now because the new boiler would make steam more quickly and with more foce and would bang for a few years until we get the rust out of the system - does this make sense?

A forced hot water baseboard loop most definately can be installed into a steam boiler. It can be a closed type system with a coil, feeder, relief valve, aquastat, expansion tank and pump; or an open loop circulating boiler water with a pump and aquastat. AS far as the noise goes....that will happen only if the returns are sluggish due to age and corrosion, or if there is a back pitch problem somewhere, or if there is a cold air draft on the steam lines. Of the above mentioned, the latter two will haved caused a problem already, and you'd hear the banging. Newer boilers do steam up quickly and a clean return is important. You may want to replace the old return with the installation of the new boiler. You may also want to seek out another contractor. Telling you there will be banging for a few years sounds like he is inexperienced.
