I am a small-time landlord of a NY City building. I don't even own it; I'm a sub-leassor. But with my triple net lease I have to take care of it. My lease is getting short, so I really don't want to buy a new boiler. I have a problem and think that I have a bunch of bozos giving me bad info. The facts: I installed the Weil-Mclain #2 oil fired hot water boiler to heat the building about 25 years ago. It is about 450,000 btu's. I don't have the model #, but am getting it (I live in a different part of the country). I have a water leak and everyone is telling me that I must replace the boiler. Now, they haven't even taken-off the side covers! I probably need a new gasket on one the sections or whatever. I've called numerous, so called experts, who won't even look at it and just want to sell a new unit. My oil company, Petro, is just a big rip-off outfit that definately wants me to buy a new one from them. I need a competent Weil-Mclain repairman that can get this fixed for me pronto. I have cold tenants and don't want to buy a new boiler. Out here in the hinterlands, there are souls that can even do a good, safe job of welding cast iron (if that's want's needed). ANY HELP OUT THERE FOR A BUILDING IN NYC??? Thank you.

    not sounding good

But click on the link to "find a professional" and check in your area. I hate to be the bearer of bad new's but if it's 25 year's old you could end up with a headache trying to repair it. Have someone come in and do a full inspection and good luck!!! :)

Thanks. I hope that isn't the case. I sure hope that it's a gasket between sections or a replaceable section...or last choice maybe weldable. Thanks again.

    a leaking section ....

must be replaced ... i keep hearing on this site about "repairing, drilling, brazing " cast iron .....No, No, No ! .... No exceptions ! ... in New York State it is a Felony to repair a pressure vessel without an "r" stamp ... any moron that tells you he is gonna "weld" it ... certainly does not carry the insurance and qualifications to get the capability of the "R" stamp ....

Thank you. I have purchased a new boiler. But I do think that I do have one of the few real, certified welders of cast iron. The fellow that I was going to use has the Certificate. He works for Babcock & Wilcox welding pressure boilers for nuclear submarines. I know that yeahoos all say that they can do it...and can't, but this guy is real.

    welding in new york ...

certificate ... doesn't mean anything ! .. you must have an "R" stamp (insurance) .. and have the repair inspected ....pressure vessel repair - "R" stamp = Felony
