Tips for homeowners

As a homeowner, and expecting high heating costs, I think homeowners should very carefully check their heating systems. Have a pro come and take a look, and clean out your boiler to make sure it works properly.

Other things one can do is to insulate the heating pipes (fiberglass insulation), put extra insulation in your attic, check the main vents and radiator vents (possibly replace some old ones). Fixing any of these items is relatively inexpensive. If anyone has questions on vents - go with Gortons. I've found them to be the best and Ken Kunz at Gorton (in New Jersey) is absolutely terrific.

If any of the pros have anything to add, please do so.

    more tippin

tighten up your house!!! cheap and easy even most new houses are sealed poorly the wind blows right through them. Get the little foam gaskets for your plugs and wall switches even those on inside walls can create lots of leakage. Pay particular attention to garrage doors even if your garrage isn't heated they are a big source of infiltration. If you know how without getting zapped turn your aquastat down, most are set at 180-210. Most houses can heat fine with water much cooler than that.

Insulating the heating pipes on hot water systems may not be worth anything at all if the pipes are all within the heated envelope and the system is well balanced.

Any efforts spent insulating would be best directed around the house; especially around any top plates in the attic, the sill plates, doors sills etc.
