Oil Tank(s) Connection

Kevin G

I need to find out the proper installation of 2-275 gal. oil tanks in a bsmt. adjacent to the burner. Haven't done it in over 25 yrs. and I've been asked to do the connection for a friend that is having problems w/ getting it done. This is a fresh install. New system altogether. And the last one I did was outside and a single tank.

Thanks in Advance,
Kevin G.

    Funny Coincidence...

...today, the two 275Gal Roth tanks I spec'ed arrived and are being installed. According to my installer, MA code requires they have separate fill pipes (but can share a vent). Roth makes a kit for that purpose. Thus, at least in MA you'll have three wall penetrations when installing two tanks.

If your friend has not bought his/her tanks yet, consider getting the Roth safety tanks. Virtually spill-proof and easy to install (even come with built-in carrying handles). I'm not sure how my tanks will be twinned together on the burner-supply side, hope it won't be something as kludgy as check-valves...

Oh, and I'm a mere homeowner mortal, so apply the usual grain of salt. Since it's been a while since you last installed twinned tanks, it may be a really good idea to check if the local codes have changed since you last installed a tank farm... could avoid costly mistakes.

    Constantin,

Roth tanks ARE approved for "fill and spill"(U.L. says so, and as long as manufacturers instructions are followed, it's O.K. by code.....NOW, in accordance with NFPA31 in Ma.) The way your getting it done is far superior to the mentioned.2 fills beats a single any day!

Roth actually makes a connector setup for "duel tanks" piped to a single fill that is approved in Ma., but your way smarter going with 2 fills and a single (properly piped) vent.

You are commended for being concerned about the way that the fuel is picked up between the 2 tanks. The tanks are top feed, and by using Roth' special adapter, your tanks will deplete at the same rate.(they say). Chris

    purge

Two roths together- I've heard of problems with burners that have long pre and post purge.(Not equalizing fast enough maybe)

    Thanks for the note, JCA!

However, I wonder, why is a seperate fill for each tank superior to a combined fill?
