Peerless steam changeout

I could've tied it right back in copper , but we do things better than that . I took precautions not to put the system's dirty water back into the boiler - I purged the baseboard zone and steam return . It didn't matter , the boiler water came back filthy after 1/2 hour . This one needs a more thorough cleaning . I wonder how long the Taco IFC will hold up to the high temp . We had it pumping into the boiler .

  • These boilers die hard

This one was still running , but the coil leaked for years and corroded the iron away . The homeowner decided to change the whole thing instead of a costly repair . There was a 1 inch pipe from the header at the celing to the return , not sure why it was there . The header had proper pitch away from the boiler so we took that pipe out . Take a look at the return hole in the boiler . It was plugged shut . The copper header was a nice touch . Been connected to the boiler for 17 years and looked in pretty goos shape still . The buried return is black steel and that can't last much longer .

    Ron,

Nice work, as usual. Taco says the pump will take 230° continuously. I'd like to hear when the zone starts to "overheat" too. Keep us informed. Chris
  • You're the best

    Nice work, Ron.

You've probably already done it, but take that boiler drain line to daylight at the floor drain so it doesn't splatter.

    All the best,

    Alan

    That 1-inch pipe

was an early equalizer- they called it a "bleeder" in the old days. It predates the Hartford Loop.

    Nice job, as usual.

    Is that coffee

in the gauge glass? Nice work !
  • Unless the pump

fails within the year , I'll never know what happens to the little devil . The service department takes over at the 1 year mark . The original Taco had a date code of 1990 , and it still ran . Who says wet rotor pumps don't last on steam . Thanks Chris .
  • Do you mean the Low water cutoff blowdown ?

I piped it to be just low enough for a 5 gallon bucket to fit without splashing . Sadly , the home didn't have a floor drain . Most of them don't where we work . Thanks alot Alan . How's things going over on the left coast ?
  • When I first saw the pipe

I thought we had a partial counterflow system here . Of course , most of the main and the end of it were covered in wood , so it was impossible to see what was going on . I was just very glad to see water in the return pipe when we cut it . I hate breaking bad news to a homeowner . Thank you Steamhead .
  • Same to you 1chmb

    I appreciate it .
  • It looked more like

Choolate Cow , that drink we had as kids . Thanks Tommy .

    Steam Boil

Nice work as usual, Ron. But what really caught my eye was the vice next to the boiler! I wish everyone had one in the basement.
