Adjusting Outdoor Reset on WM Ultra
Mr Takagi
Member Posts: 26
Is there a setting on the Weil-Mclean Ultra to change either the 10 minute time between temp. boosts on outdoor reset, or to make the temp. boost less than the preset 18deg.? I have an old gravity system with lots of volume, and it looks like I will still be overshooting my temp. even with the outdoor reset. If I could slow down the boost temp, it would give the Ultra more time to get up to its target temp, and allow it to modulate down sooner. Does this make sense? Or am I asking for too much.

No, You are not asking too much.....
and...
yes... all you want to do can be done...
Call WM tech line and they can guide you through it.
I have a combo of CI baseboard and CI rads. and the adjustments made a huge improvement!!!

I read their manual and this was one major reason I did not go with the Ultra. This "18F (10C) boost every 10 min" made no sense to me. I have a gravity system too.0 -
Jim,
It is very easy to change the settings.... takes all of about a minute.
I just feel that it is best for WM tech people to guide there customers through the operation rather than me trying to do that.
If you were my customer I would galdly do it for you.
They like other of the condensing boiler people have tried to "idiot proof" the program... if you can talk to them in such a way that they can feel confident that you won't screw up the boiler and then go trashing them all over the place, as has happened here in the past with other manufacturers and the Ultra... the they can easily give intructions on how to fine tune the thing to your system.
The program that is installed initially in the boiler only uses a fraction of the total capability of the unit.

Help Floyd!
I talked to Tom at Weil Mclain Tech support today, and he said the only way to change the boost temp or time is with a laptop connection. I was under the impression it could be done with the control panel fairly easily. Any suggestions?

Adjustments
Sorry Floyd, I'm back again. The 18 degree boost every 10 minutes has been a disappointing setup to me also. As you probably remember, I have a converted gravity system also, but, how would you determine what a good setup would be? 10 degrees every 15 or 20 minutes, or more? It is true, that mine overshoots the therm also. I'm happy to hear about the adjustment.0 -
Let me get back to you....
I have a paper here that will explain what to do.....
however.... it is marked "confidential"... I cannot betray the trust I was given with it and post it or give you the info. without permission from WM.....
I'll try to see if they will let me post it or why they refused to give you the info. That is why I told you to contact them directly in the frist place. The fellow that I need to talk to is not in today. In fact I need to reestablish a contact there, as the fellow that I had been working closely with has apparently moved on....
I'll post more, once I can find out more.

Any news yet?
Has anyone found some answers on this yet? I came across some instructions on how to access additional parameters, but it was very limited (It was part of the alarm module instructions). Just a side note - I gave up on my B&G 100 last night that must have been older than me, and put in a Taco 007. Seems to be moving plenty of water and it is much quieter.

Mike,
I talked with Steve @ WM tech. services yesterday....
They are actually putting together a bulletin concerning the changing of the reset setpoints....
It can be done right from the face of the unit.
I have permission to copy the paper I have....
when I get a minute, I'll try to scan it so that I can eml it to those that want it.... time has been real tough right now with the cool wet weather here lately....
or.. call Steve directly at WM .....219-879-6561 ext. 442

Adjusting Outdoor Reset on WM Ultra
Thanks Mike for the suggestion. That is one of the concerns I had also. It boosts up too quickly. Thanks again, Floyd, I'll take a copy of it also.

Thanks!
Thanks for the help Floyd. I'll give Steve a call, and if you want to email me what you have that would be great.

More News
I talked with Steve at WM today, and he was very helpful. He said he will fax me the info on changing the reset. I have also been wondering about setting the max. firing rate since it obviously has that type of controls built in. Steve informed me that there is a way to set the maximum fan speed, which in turn is setting your max. input. He's supposed to be getting that to me also. What I'm thinking is that if I can keep the max. firing rate down to say 70% of max output, and still keep the house warm, that will save even more gas because it should be more efficient when not under full load. It may not help at all, but it'll be fun to play with.

Question
Mike, You said he was going to fax you information on setting the reset? When you say reset, you mean, adjusting the boost from 18* every 10 minutes, to another figure that will prevent a thermostat overrun, correct?
That is the only concern I had with the Ultra also. I'm glad you mentioned it. I would be interested in what settings you were going to use. Please let me know how to change the boost setting, and what setting you are going to try with yours. Thanks again for the question.

Answer
Reynz, I sent you an email with some info. Here are the settings I'm going to try: I set the boost time up to 20 minutes from the default of 10 min. I also set the maximum fan speed down to 3900rpm from 5200rpm. This should put me at around 68% modulation on an Ultra 155, which works out to about 105K output. I went with the 155 in the first place because I wasn't sure the 105 would be enough. Now I can run at that max. output and find out for sure.

Me too
Mike,
Looks like you have a good plan going. I just got a Ultra 105 to put into my old gravity system. While we haven't had much call for heat yet - the couple of times it has come on, it has overshot pretty badly. I could have gone with an Ultra 80, but I have a large unheated attic space that I intend to remodel and I will be adding heat to the basement this winter so I went ahead and got the 105. It would be nice to be able to run it at a lower output as you intend until I get new zones installed. One of the reasons for spending the extra bucks for this unit is to get better controls - I was hoping that the documentation that came with the unit would cover the programming, but apparently not. Would you please send me the programming info?
Thanks,
Henry0
