Steam Boiler Relocation

Dan,

I need a little advice. We have a customer whose steam boiler is in a basement that flooded. The system is a 2 pipe with a condensate receiver & boiler feed pump. There are true cast iron steam radiators on the first & second floor. There are also zone valves on the supply of each radiator controlled by a 24 volt thermostat. The customer wants to know if they can move the boiler up to the first floor which would be on the same level as the radiators. If they can, could you give a brief description on how to do it. The existing boiler is a Weil Mcclain 80 series 5 section. Thank you for your help.

  • It would be tough

You would need to locate the pump tank INLET lower than every pipe in the house, or it wouldn't drain the lines AND vent the air. That's the obstacle.

The boiler can be higher, and downfeed into the supply, AS LONG AS THE SUPPLY CAN DRAIN IT'S WATER INTO THE TANK.

Pipe sizing would be CRITICAL, as any surging or priming would empty the boiler pretty fast. It isn't the preferred location, exactly, but neither is under water, where it is now. Get it in writing from the manufacturer what size header and related piping you use.
