I have a gv boiler with intermitent ignition failure. It will run for several months then nothing. Everything has tested out fine. When it does it in front of me everything happens including the gas valve opening and ignitor lighting but no ignition. W/M has no idea. Any ideas???

    similar experience

Had one just like that many years ago. WM & I couldn't figure it out either. Eventually, we replaced the gas valve & the problem disappeared. They were very generous regarding our time invested.

you correctly this does not occur very often, correct?

You say when it happens in front of you the gas valve opens, how do you know that? Do you hear it click? What is the make of gas valve and module?

You also say the igniter is lighting, is it a spark ignition or a hot surface igniter?

If you can answer these questions I can perhaps help you further.

    Gas valve

I also had this problem on a new one several years ago and changing the gas valve did the trick.

    If all else fails.....

pull the cone and check it for dirt....have had them do that in dirty envioronments......maybe dust and dirt or the cone can burn out once in a great while. Either can cause goofy problems.

    w/m failures

Pull the flue outlet pipe and look in there, you will find particulate at the bottom flue if problem is arising. We have found several that are appx 10 yrs old building up by products of combustion inside the heat x. Only way to clean them is to dismantle and separate the sections and brush and wash down. The intermittent failure was being caused by pressure switch opening up on start, once cleaned no further problem. Good luck.

The gas valve has 2 valves in series, correct? Or are thes elminiated on HSI? Could the main valve be opening but not the safety if they are still contructed with a seperate safety valve ahead of the main valve? BTW unless you have a pressure gauge on the main burner and a voltmeter (or perhaps test lights) on the mian burner you don't know its opening. Its entierly possible that the solenoid is pulling in but the daphragm is sticking ot the seat...at least I had this problem with an absolutely ancient honeywell valve that would stick after sitign clsoed for the summer.

Make sure this recall doesn't apply to you...

    before you do anything else.
