What is the best method to clean an old ARCO boiler? I want to perform a yearly cleaning, not performed in last two years. I have heard vinegar works well. What about baking soda? I have LOSt Art of Steam Heating and Pocketful of Steam Problems for reference. P O S P says to refer to Manufacturers recomendations for cleaning. Boiller is 85 yeaers old. THanks in advance for any suggestions.

You may be talking about two
different things; firesides and watersides.
Firesides for that ole guy is a good brush and vacuuming. Maybe a water (steam) cleaning, but I wouldn't.
Watersides I would leave alone, FACT!
You go throwing anything in that antique and then flushing and back-flushing it and it will probably leak, been there, seen that, lots of times!
PS: before you throw anything in there you better find out what the pH of the water is. If it's between 6 and 8 leave it alone!0
