Zone Valve vs Zoned Circulator Comparison Check List

Seems to be a reoccurring topic so here is a checklist for making comparisons...

I think it’s also necessary that when making comparisons it’s important to look at applications, arrangement of equipment, comfort expectations, types of loads and all available products.

    Operating cost

    will vary somewhat with zoned pumps. Depends on how much energy you are moving while consuming X amount of electrical energy.

    Siggy use a wire to water formula

    E= .00302 X density of fluid X flow gpm x operating head

    divided by wattage draw of circ.

    So an 80 watt pump moving 10 gpm at 6 feet of heat would be 13.7% efficient.

    E= .00302 X 60.7 X 10 X 6 divided by 80 watts

    Use this same pump to move a mere 2 gpm @2 ft in a typical small radiant zone and look at the efficiency!

    This is my biggest gripe about zoning with circ pumps. And without balance valves the circs could be running way off of the curve.

    You would need to know these numbers for every pumped flow to be accurate in the comparison chart, wouldn't you?
