Outdoor Temp Sensor Conrol

I was wondering which units have you found are good for retrofits, so adjust thew boiler temps based on the outdoor temps. Similar to the Buderus units, but that could be retrofitted to standard setups. Also have you fond that in the Northeast these units can be worth it?

What brand boiler do you have?

Many of the boiler manufactures offer these controls. Close inspection will show most are "labeled" tekmar controls built under their OEM company.

tekmar and HeatTimer are the brands I am familiar with. I believe Honeywell offers some controls for this also. try their websites for more info. Calleffi has some great "smart" systems with remote readout and control if this interests you.

Find an installer with experience installing and "dialing in" this type of control. Saving energy while destroying your boiler would not be a good trade off :)

  • We had a client install a Tekmar outdoor reset controller on a baseboard system in MA, and make no other changes to his system. He saw a 20% fuel efficiency increase. Results may vary of course and someone should take a look at your setup to make sure it's appropriate for you, but the short answer is YES it can be worth it.

You may want to make clear that its not the outdoor reset technology at fault, but probably the installers settings and programing. Just want to make sure that statement isnt misunderstood.

  • at fault? it saved him 20% of his fuel usage. perhaps I could have worded that more clearly, in retrospect. the 20% fuel efficiency increase is a good thing ;)
