oil fill size

I heard that if I bushed my oil fill down from 2" to 1 1/4", (it is a long story why I want to do this) to match my vent, the oil could back up in the fill line and blow out at the driver, on my house, ect. Is this true? Even if I have a Scully cap on the fill, I forget the name for it but the hose locks onto it during delivery.

Just leave it alone,
if it ain't broke, ya can't fix it, but you can sure screw it up, FACT!0 -
Err,
You don't really want to do that, you merely think you do.
Use some nice landscaping around it, that won't overgrow. Avoid thorny plants, or plants that produce strong allergens, and everyone will still think of you as that nice guy...0 -
It's not for appearance reasons.
Here's why. I current have a 36" round tank, 60" long. I currently have a 2" fill w/ a 1" vent, which I recently found out was dangerous. I can up my vent to 2", but they don't make a tank guage/vent alarm combo that fits a 2" flange and has a 2" vent connection. The only one the make for a 36" tank has a 1 1/4" vent connection. So I could use that if it is okay for me to bush my fill down to 1 1/4". I don't want my tank to rupture. So...I want to fix it before it breaks. The tank looks like it is in good shape, and I want to keep it that way. Replacing it isn't an option, as the hatch way used to get large items into my basement has been close off many years ago and the stairs going into the basement from inside wont accomodate an oil tank.0 -
Oil fill
Do it right and repipe the fill and vent to 1 1/4" period.0 -
vent
Still confused. It doesn't sound as if your fill size is the problem but your vent. Why dont you keep the fill the same and increase your vent size that is what is wrong?0 -
Fill/vent
NFPA recently changed their code allowing 1 1/4" vent (previously 2") with fill size up to 2". U/L sticker on tank says fill and vent same dimension. Old school practice I believe in fill and vent same size minimum 1 1/4". It's been MA code for years and no problem.0 -
Here's a company that makes a
2" by 2" combo, and at the bottom of the page they say that gauges are available for tanks up to 70" in dia. Give them a call. Oil Equipment Manufacturing.

Vent size
Scott,Most of the tanks in my area are vented with 1 1/4 inch pipe and have 2" fill. This is also code for our area. I have seen some older tanks vented with as little as 1/2" pipe. I have never seen a problem caused by an undersized vent. Why do you want to reduce the fill pipe size?
