Can anybody help me find technical data about a great old boiler I acquired on purchase of a new house (I won't say I bought the house for the boiler, but ...)
It's (was) a coal fired, 2psig steam heating boiler, plumbed for single pipe in a 1924 house in New York. I have the following details from the stoking door, but have hit a brick wall trying to find any existing records:
Richardson Boiler Company
Model # 418A
Pat. Jan 8, 1899
Foundry Stamped Feb 7, 1899
stamped 422 6307 inside the stoking door.
Anything about the boiler, the company, or even period heating boilers would be very gratefully accepted. I intend this device to last another 100 years, and would prefer not to spend countless hours with a borescope before rolling up my sleeves.

Richardson
later became part of the Richardson & Boynton company, which not only sold boilers, radiators and stoves but also marketed a Vapor system of their own design. I have their 1925 catalog but the 418A doesn't appear in it.
It does, however, appear in the Hydronic Rating Handbook as an early Richardson Sectional boiler. Rating is 450 square feet of steam radiation when the available coal was burned in 8 hours.
Sectional boilers such as this one had very large flue passages which were fine for coal, but not good for oil or gas. However, it is possible to install baffles in these boilers to slow down the hot flue gases as they go thru the flue passages. This makes them give up more of their heat. This is a job for a pro with the proper test equipment and knowhow.
