Question about Burnham V-Series boiler failure

I own a two-family home heated with two Burnham V-73 T boilers. The boilers are oil-fired and the heating system is steam radiators. About a year ago, my tenant began having to add water to his system more and more often. By January, he was adding water twice a day. I had my oil supplier inspect and clean the boiler. The supplier informed me that there was a leak in the tank of the boiler; that this model boiler was prone to this defect; that the only solution was to replace the boiler; and finally, that since the boiler was eleven years old, the defect would not be covered by Burnham's ten year manufacturing warranty. My tenant limped through the heating season, adding water at least twice a day; I am about to arrange for replacement of the boiler and before going ahead, I wanted to check out what my oil supplier told me. Can anyone verify that this is in fact a common defect in Burnham V-series boilers from around 1992-93? And that the only solution is to replace the boiler? I am especially concerned because my boiler is beginning to do the same thing; I would hate to spend several thousand dollars to replace both boilers if this could be repaired.

Not a defect
The symptoms you are describing are not caused by what you are terming a "defect". Any boiler connected to a steam system may be prone to the symptoms you have described. There may be any number of causes of the section failure you have encountered. Water quality (PH), excessive makeup water, system venting problems, boiler surging and many other factors can all contribute to this. Any steam system is going to be an old system where various system problems can occur to shorten the life of the connected boiler.
Once replaced, I would always ask the installer to completely check the "system" for possible problems that may contribute to boiler corrosion, including the water quality. Also...e-mail me with the name and location of your supplier. I would like to discuss this with them also. Hope this helps.
