Does the natural gas meter in my house regulate the pressure of the gas or does it simple measure the amount of gas used?

    Meters do not

    regulate pressure. The pressure is set by a pressure reducing valve (PRV) before entering the meter, if required. There are many low pressure systems here in Mass that do not need a PRV and may even require a booster pump.

    This is my simple explanation and you will probably get more detailed information from "gas" people.

    Just measures

    The meter is just a measuring device, it does drop a little pressure since it's a type of air motor that uses the flow through it to make the dials turn. Almost all residential meters have 1/4 to 1/2 pound pressure gas in them although some have 2 psi gas. If there's regulation it's ahead of the meter. Where I am it's 20 or 60 psi regulated to 1/4 or 2psi.
