air vent

I am working on an original hoffman controled heat system. All thermostatic trap elements have been replaced including the ones at the end of the mains. We, however, are still having trouble getting heat to the ends, which is especially a problem because the thermostat is in a back appartment. The other appartments overheat. Should I add vents to the ends of the mains? Or, there might be a problem with the main vent by the differential loop (single pipe type loop). How would I replace or redo this main vent as it is a Hoffman No. 15, and I'm sure they don't make these anymore.

Thanks for all your help. This forum is great!

    another thought

Could I eliminate the traps that go between the ends of the steam mains and the dry returns. Then cap where it enterd the dry return and add a large vent or two to the end of the main?

    Just another idea.
  • Take the vent out to test...

If you remove temporarily the vent, you can eliminate any air problems from your troubleshooting.

If you get steam at the vent location, find the leaking trap.

If it still doesn't heat every riser to every radiator, and the radiator is on with an open trap, you are running out of steam.

That usually is caused by missing insulation, which increases the load on that pipe so much, that it no longer is large enough to supply steam to what's connected to it.

Is the boiler big enough and fired at rating? Is it clean and well adjusted?

    That's a possibility

but try Noel's recommendation first. If the #15 vent is bad, replace it with a Gorton #2.
