nyc renter wants to know what type of vent for steam pipe in apt
last winter steam and water were spitting out of the steam heat pipe in my nyc apartment and ruined the ceiling.
I need to know what type of valve or vent to put there now so that stuff wont happen again. Formerly, I put the type that one uses for radiators, and I guess they blew out.
Im on the 5th floor the pipe runs from the floor to the ceiling and the hole is near the ceiling.
Also, how often do they need to be replaced?
Please help me if you can, and thanks

Vent on Riser
We use the Heat Timer Vari-Vent. However, any vent should last more than one year. If it is that wet on the riser, there is probably a problem in the basement. This is where I would start looking to actually solve the situation in the long term.0 -
Kat, try Matt \"Mad Dog\" Sweeney
he's on Long Island and has built a steam system from scratch, so I know he can straighten yours out. Go to the Find a Professional page of this site and follow the instructions- his company is Triple Crown.
Tom, your problem could have several causes besides the vents. I don't know what part of the country you are in, but my advice is similar- Find a Professional. Follow the instructions to locate a steam man who can help you. If you're in the Baltimore area, e-mail me.
