Lightweight Concrete Overpours
Big Idahoan
Member Posts: 43
A while back there was a posting regarding thinslab overpours for radiant heat systems. If I remember right hotrod had a suggestion for the type of concrete to use. We are trying to help the guys who do the overpours have a better finished product. What does everybody use? What do you get the best results with? Thanks for the help.

A lot depends
on how nice of a finsihed surface you want, and what type of coverings.
A regular concrete mix with pea gravel aggreate works if you don't mind cracking. Fine for carpeted or floating wood flooring.
Gyp products finish nicer and often smoother, little if any cracking. But not a great wear surface, as they chalk and scratch easily. Some tilesetters will refuse to adhere tile directly to gyp products.
USG has a high psi product they claim can be a final finished surface, much higher psi rating similar to regular concrete. Although I have never used it personally.
The key to the quality and durability of any over pour job is the strength of the framing below. If the joist are undersized or closely sized and allow deflection or bounce you may encounter problems with final coverings and cracking caused by movement of the joist and subfloor system. Plan and size for the additional dead load the product presents.
I like a TJI type of joist best. Great strength and little if any movement from drying, twisting, cracking, etc, often seen with dimensional lumber these days
