New to boilers?

I'm new to boilers and don't understand steam vents? Some of my radiators have non-adjustable and some are adjust? Why? What is the adjust for? Also I have a pin hole in one rad! What can be done there? do I replace or can it be fixed? I live in the midwest (Iowa) and have not found anyone in the yellow pages to talk to. One of my radiators is cold too?? How do I fix this? I have a very small understanding of this system and not a lot of extra money to throw at this. This is my first home. Any and all help would be great. Thanks, Roy

books
As a homeowner I recommend Dan's books We got Steam Heat and The Lost Art of Steam Heating. I bought both paid attention to the people on this site and using what I learned restored my steam system to it's original working condition.0 -
Welcome to the world of steam heating
a superior form of heating that you sometimes have to search for help on. But there's plenty of talent here on the Wall. Bryan says he's in South Dakota- what part, Bryan? Also Dave "Boilerpro" Bunnell is east of you, in Illinois.
And I'll second Dean's recommended reading list.

find a pro
You can use the find a pro option at the top of the page. As a homeowner like Dean, I recommend buying those 2 books and reading them. First 'We got steam heat' then 'The lost Art.' You will understand your system in no time and (hopefully) know what you can tackle yourself (changing a radiator vent, for example) and what you should leave to the pros (re-piping your boiler).
Steam is elegant, quiet and a great even heat. I love those big hot rads cranking in the winter.....can't wait for it to get cold here in Philly.0
